The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa enables young overseas nationals to live and work in the UK for up to two years. This travel permit is only available to citizens from other countries that participate in the scheme. Each year a certain number of places are allocated by the government for the different countries in the programme.

Stevens Machi Solicitors can help you with your Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme application. We have over 30 years’ combined experience in immigration law, so you can have the confidence that we will obtain for you the best possible outcome.

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: Eligibility

You may be able to apply for a Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa if you satisfy the following essential criteria:

  • You are between 18 and 30 years old.
  • You have a sufficient amount of money in savings (currently £1,890).
  • You are a national of a country that is part of the Youth Mobility Scheme or you have British nationality (for example a British overseas citizen).
  • You do not have any children under 18 who you are finically responsible for or who live with you.
  • You have not already lived in the UK under the Scheme.

The countries that participate in the Scheme are Australia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand and Monaco. If you are a citizen of Taiwan, Hong Kong or the Republic of Korea you must also be sponsored by a UK organisation and have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship.

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: Documentation

To support your application, you must provide certain paperwork. This includes:

  • Your passport or another form of travel identification.
  • A bank statement to prove you have the appropriate amount of savings in your account.

Your documents must be valid and correct, otherwise, your application could be delayed while extra checks are carried out. We will ensure you provide the right information so your application can proceed without delay and additional cost.

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: Conditions

The Tier 5 visa allows the permit holder remain in the UK for up to two years. During this time, you can work in wide range of roles and travel in and out of the country at any time while your visa is valid.

It is important that you are aware of the conditions that apply to your visa so that you avoid breaking any of the immigration rules that apply. For example, visa holders cannot:

  • obtain government financial support;
  • prolong their stay past the two-year maximum; and
  • include family members in their application.

If you wish to bring relatives with you to the UK, they must apply to enter and stay in the country separately. If this applies to you, we can provide advice and assist with preparing you family members’ visa applications.

While the Tier 5 Visa allows individuals to work in a wide range of jobs, some restrictions do apply. For example, visa holders cannot gain employment as a trainee doctor or dentist, or a professional sportsperson or coach. There are also some restrictions on self-employment. It is good idea to get clear, expert advice on what roles you can and cannot so you are not in danger of breaching the conditions of your visa.

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: Procedure

The visa fee is £230, as well as a charge for your healthcare while staying in the UK. Provided your circumstances are straightforward, you should receive a response within three weeks.
